Winning streak continues for UC Clermont volleyball team

The UC Clermont volleyball team faced two more strong opponents during the past week, but were able to extend their season opening winning streak to six games.

The Cougars started their week with a Wednesday trip to Clark State – one of the top contenders in the Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference. As expected, the match was quite a battle. Clark State’s scrappy defense gave Clermont all they could handle. The Cougars were able to take the first two sets 25-17, 25-18, before Clark roared back to capture set three 25-19. At that point, momentum shifted to Clermont. The Cougars took the fourth set and the match 25-13. Fourteen Clermont service aces and 72 digs helped offset the great Clark State defensive effort in the victory.

After a four game road trip, the Cougars finally got to return to the Student Activities Center on Friday to host a rematch with West Virginia Tech. The Golden Bears had recently undergone a coaching change and came in highly motivated for the contest.

The game was definitely a back-and-forth affair. The teams exchanged leads throughout the evening and put on quite a show for the capacity crowd. In the end, the Cougars were able to squeak out a 25-20, 25-22, 25-23 sweep. A .377 team hitting percentage provided the difference for Clermont.

Next up for the Cougars is a weekend trip north of Columbus to participate in the Ohio State-Marion Invitational tournament. Clermont will face two high level NAIA programs in Concordia University and Indiana University-East, along with OCAC rivals Clark State and host Ohio State-Marion.
