UC Clermont Volleyball Team was able to enjoy the friendly confines of their own gym this week as they hosted two strong teams. The Cougars made the most of the opportunity as they won both matches. In the process, UC Clermont was ranked second in the nation in the first 2013 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) coaches’ poll.
The USCAA coaches’ poll committee selected the Cougars as the number two ranked team in the nation based upon their outstanding winning record and the strength of their schedule. UC Clermont has only been nationally ranked this high one other time in the history of the program. See the USCAA website for more information: http://www.theuscaa.com/landing/index
On September 19, Ohio Collegiate Athletic Conference (OCAC) rival Clark State visited the Cougardome for an important regular season match. The first contest between these two programs was quite a battle, so this game promised to be exciting.
The first two sets went to the home team 25-13, 25-12 as Clermont grabbed early momentum. Clark State, however, was not about to give up. Backed by their solid floor defense, Clark grabbed set three 25-23. The Cougars then regained control and closed out the match 25-12. Clermont’s 73 digs and outstanding depth helped neutralize a good Clark State attack.
This win gave Clermont the lead in the OCAC regular season title chase at mid-season.
The home stand continued Sunday as the Cougars hosted the Harriers from Miami-Hamilton. This rematch promised to be a good one after an exciting first contest in Hamilton on Labor Day weekend.
Thanks to some outstanding floor defense from both teams and a solid Cougar block, the first two sets were tight affairs. Clermont took over momentum midway in the initial set to grab that one 25-16 and had to survive a great Harrier run in set two, before coming back late and winning 26-24. Set three saw the Cougar offense kick things up a notch. Clermont took that set and the match 25-12.
The coming week will be a busy one for the Cougars. Tonight, they travel up I-71 to face Central State – a rising program in NCAA Division II. They then play back-to back games over the weekend. On Saturday, an always strong Miami-Middletown program visits the Cougardome for a 1 p.m. start. Clermont then hits the road for another OCAC contest at Ohio State-Marion on Sunday.
