Drop off unwanted, expired medications Saturday

Butler and Warren county residents can safely dispose of unwanted or expired medications Oct. 26 during the National Prescription Drug Take Back.

This is the seventh such event since the Drug Enforcement Administration began the program three years ago.

“It’s a public service that we have found extremely valuable,’’ said Rusty Payne, DEA spokesman. “The public has responded overwhelmingly.”

During the most recent take-back last April, 371 tons – more than 742,000 pounds – of prescription drugs were turned in at about 5,800 sites nationally, Payne said.

Since the program began the DEA and its law enforcement partners took in 2.8 million pounds – more than 1,400 tons – of pills.

The DEA partners with local law enforcement agencies to determine drop-off sites. Take back days are schedule about every six months, Payne said.

Until federal disposal regulations of drugs are written and a more permanent solution can be found for disposal, take back days will continue, Payne said.

Medications and over-the-counter drugs can be turned in from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with no questions asked. Drugs can be brought in original or other containers.

Those who want to remain anonymous can soak off labels or black out names and prescription numbers. Syringes, liquids and intravenous products will not be accepted for disposal.
